British Imperialists' Motives in Scramble for Africa Essay

British Imperialists Motives in Scramble for Africa - Essay ExampleNevertheless, imperialism is a many-faceted phenomenon which had political, frugal and social roots. Indeed, Socialist and Marxist critics narrowed its definition down and applied the term to a certain stage of capitalist societies when discussing social and and economic conditions (p.2).Thus, any attempt to give an account on the British imperialism must highlight the underlying political, social and economic motives. As Robinson and Gallagher (1961, pp. 19) stated a showtime task in analysing the late-Victorians share in the sectionalization of Africa is to understand the motives of the ministers who directed it, and the study of ordained thinking is indispensable to this. The aim of this paper is to scrutinize British Imperialists motives in scramble for Africa in three respects political, economic and social. The Scramble for Africa begun in the last quarter of the 18th century and lasted until the WWI. While the decline of the footstool influence created a power vacuum in the region, the colonial powers of Europe, following the lead of the British imperialists, have got begun to fill that void. In Africa and The Victorians, Robinson and Gallagher examined the relationship between the partition of Africa and British decision-making process. According to them, the Victorians political relations with Africa changed radically after 1882. Lord Salisbury stated that I do not exactly know the realize of this sudden revolution. But there it is (Quoted by Robinson and Gallagher, 1961, pp. 17). Late-Victorians were more eager to dominate Africa than their predecessors and the British forces invaded Egypt in 1882. The collapse of weak African governments may also have vie role in the partition. In fact, British divide and rule policy was also an important factor in the national unrest and perturbation in Africa. However, Robinson and Gallagher focused on the British policy-making as the under lying political factor. In fact, according to them, as also indicated by Schumpeter, The possibility of official thinking in itself was a cause of late-Victorian imperialism (pp. 21). Indeed, England had a long tradition of imperial rule and the that policy tradition inherited from Pitt and Channing to Palmerston and Clarendon (p.22). They also highlight ed (pp.22-23) policy makers ignorance of Africa, as the partition was made at house parties without any public interest or participation. In fact, the interests, and thus motives, of policy makers were different in each country. In Egypt, it was due to the collapse of the Kedive regime. In east and west Africa, British interests were related to the Egyptian occupation. In Southern Africa, imeperial intervention against the Transvaal was designed preceding(prenominal) all to uphold and restore the imperial influence which economic growth, Africaner nationalism and the Jameson fiasco had overthrown (pp. 463). In Rhodesias and Nyasala nd, the motives were merged with imperial aims in Cape colonial amplification and balance the rise of the Transvaal (pp. 463). However, Robinson and Gallagher stressed that commercial or financial concerns were rather inconsequential in ministers decision on which territories should be occupied (pp. 463). For Robinson and Gallagher, ministers private calculations played the most important part in decision-making process and again for different reasons. However, the security concerns seem to have prevailed. In Rhodesia, it was the safety of the routes to the East, in Southern Africa it was the rescue of the colonial rule, while the safety of the routes to India was the prominent imperative (pp. 464). In fact, Robinson and Gallagher (1961, pp. 464) noted that

Globalization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Globalization - Essay ExampleThe problem today is not that there is too much globalization, but that there is far too minuscule (Wolf 2005, p 17). The citation was taken from Wolfs book, which I downloaded from rapidshare. I nett find the link now. But it is very famous and can be found in many articles. Check, for instance http//www.up.ac.za/dspace/bitstream/2263/5186/1/Bedford-Strohm_Public(2007).pdf Briefly, in this paper globalization is considered as a process fuelled by, and resulting in, development cross-border flows of goods, services, money, people, information, and culture (Taylor 2004, p 24). The article was taken from www.questia.com Here is full text of it The truth about globalization. by Timothy Taylor To keep my economist union card, I am unavoidable every morning when I arise to place my hand on the leather-bound family heirloom copy of Adam Smiths The Wealth of Nations and swear a mighty oath of faithfulness to globalization. I hereby do asseverate my solemn be lief that globalization, taken as a whole, is a positive economic force and well outlay defending. I also believe that the economic and social effects of globalization are exaggerated by both its detractors and supporters. In media coverage of anti-globalization protests, globalization practically becomes a catch-all term for capitalism and injustice. (Indeed, for some protestors, referring to capitalism and injustice would be redundant.) But economic globalization in fact describes a specific phenomenon the fruit in flows of trade and monetary capital across national borders. The trend has consequences in many areas, including sovereignty, prosperity, jobs, wages, and social legislation. Globalization is too important to be consigned to bank status. One world? The degree to which national economies are integrated is not at all obvious. It depends on your choice of perspective. During the last few decades, international flows of goods and financial capital have certainly increa sed dramatically. One snap measure of globalization is the share of economic production destined for sale in early(a) countries. In the U.S. economy, exports of goods and services were 4.9 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 1965, but 10.8 percent of GDP in 2000. From a global perspective, exports rose from 12 percent of world GDP in 1965 to 22 percent of world GDP in 2000. In round numbers, international trade of goods and services has multiply in about four decades. International financial markets are not tracked as easily as cross-border flows of goods and services. But by a var. of measures, they have also expanded considerably, especially in the last decade. Total assets held by U.S. investors in other nations nearly tripled from $2.3 trillion in 1991 to $6.2 trillion in 2000. Conversely, total foreign-owned assets in the U.S. economy quadrupled from $2 trillion in 1991 to $8 trillion in 2000. Annual global flows of foreign direct enthronement--that is, investmen t that creates a lasting management interest, often defined as more than 10 percent of voting stock in a company--rose from $200 million in 1990 to nearly $900 billion in 1999. A 1998 survey by the Bank of International Settlements found that $1.5 trillion per day was traded on foreign-exchange markets. Since foreign-exchange trading has been growing at double-digit rates, its volume now must exceed $2 trillion per day. For many countries, international finan

Public Sector Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Public Sector Management - Essay ExampleThe public sector telephoner I am going to speak about is one of the prominent companies in the Caribbean region, the name of which has been asked not to be revealed. During the lap in this caller-up, I ingest become the witness of the way the corporate governance was performed. According to the information I had been by my colleague, the sour of implementing new corporate governance strategy has been employ since the year of 1981, when the word combination corporate governance has not yet been implemented and has been known only to a few people. The need in implementing this strategy lied in the fact that the government has been facing the necessity of merging this public sector company with anformer(a) one, which put under the threat the future of many workers. Thats wherefore the Board of Directors decided to combine various corporate governance initiatives. The first step in implementation of the governance initiatives was the issue of the limited stock meant for the managers of the company as a part of their employment contract. Through this step the Board sincerely hoped that this would unite the managers with the company and would encourage them work for the benefit of this company, with building unanimous and long-term relations with the key shareholders. This set of initiatives was later followed by the granting the tag-along rights to all shareholders. From the critical point of view, tying the managers to the company as its shareholders may both work for the benefit and for the failure of the company. On the one hand - making managers shareholders of the company they work in may really encourage them for better achievements on the other hand, people dont always understand the importance of being a shareholder, which means that not all workers, becoming shareholders will display better working results. However, it is actually important for the managers to create solid relations with the investors and sh areholders, which means that being a shareholder themselves will only help them in this process. The Board of Directors has implemented a new capital share building. Identify and define and explain the different aspects to interpersonal Essay

Identify and define and explain the different aspects to interpersonal communication based on a tumble Zone episode - Essay ExampleHowever, this is made clear in the end, as Marilyn, a girl who has her own mind, and who does not want the transformation, is nonetheless force to transform, and her personality becomes exactly the same as her friend, Val, who had made the transformation earlier. The goal is to make everybody exactly the same. Why is this the reality in this universe? Professor Sig explains it. He states that the world suffered from a great deal of inequality, so the leaders of the world decided to do something about this. What they decided upon doing was that they would make everybody the same, and they would eliminate ugliness. The theory was that ugliness makes men hate, so, if nobody was ugly, then nobody would hate one another anymore. The unfortunate side effect is that the world becomes the same, and there is therefore not a place to dissent. As Marilyn pointed out, Dostoyevsky was an ugly man, yet he wrote about beautiful things. The implication is that Dostoyevsky could not exist in the present world, because he wrote about things that would be abhorrent to the people in this sanitized world. The irony is that Marilyn, herself, appeared to be a girl who might have great ideas she was intelligent and strong-willed. ... Marilyn had good feelings about her father, and she looked up to him. She told her uncle that she and her father used to talk about things that mattered in life. They used to talk about things that did not have to do with superficiality, which is what everybody is literally interested in subsequently transformation. Their ideas transcended this, and the implication was that this kind of communication was only possible between people who had not transformed. So, this is what Marilyn feared, most of all - that she would lose the ability to coherently communicate afterwards her transformation, because she understood that, a fter transformation, she would no longer have the ideas that she currently had. Her head would be filled with nothing but positivity and liquid smiles, and she apparently be this abhorrent. Not only was the ability to communicate important to Marilyn, the communication itself was important to her. She felt close to her father because she communicated with him. She wanted to feel the same closeness with her mother, Lana, and her best friend, Val. She tried to communicate, in vain, with them about how she was feeling and why she was feeling the way that she was. However, it was clear that her communication with them, and all the others, including Dr. Rex, Dr. Sig, and Uncle Rick, that her communication with them was falling on deaf ears. no(prenominal) of them heard her they were only hearing what they wanted to hear, and that was that transformation was good. Therefore, when she tried to communicate the idea that, for her, transformation was bad, they couldnt understand this, and they didnt hear her reasoning. While her need to communicate fulfill her

Socrates main ambition was to prove the truth and further explore on the issues like virtue and pity. He also critcised religious and political institutions but allegations began to be levid against him from all corners as he was charged for corrupting the mind of youths.Plato captured the nerves of the society at large and pened down his earnest views followed by Apology an d Crito. When Socrates died, Plato opened his academy in a grove which was considered to be sacred to the demigod Academus, near Athens. The importance of Academy grew when Aristotle became its student. Astronomy, Mathematics, and Philosophy were the subjects taught in the Academy.Few years of his life, Plato spent in travelling gaining more knowledge in the other parts of Mediterranean whereas rest part of his life was spent in Athens until he died in 347 B. C.Ralph Waldo Emerson, a great American essayist, philosopher, a poet and a leader of Transcendentalist movement of the nineteenth century evoked, Plato is philosophy, and philosophy, Plato, at once the glory and the shame of mankind, since neither Saxon nor Roman keep up availed to add any idea to his categories. (Emerson, Spiller, Ferguson Slater Carr 23) Plato understood politics from the angle of justice and democracy. His aim was to give the rulers the main principle of what constituted real politics. For Plato, politics was an application of what metaphysics and ethics considered as square(a).His ideal world was well-nighthing which was true, good and therefore virtuous. He gave to the world the best mouth piece of the study of human port and his relation with society. His Re creation was his ideological stand point whereby he posed number of questions and pondered their answers in the light of various assumptions and dynamics of society. His main question comes from the light of what is good and bad in their world-Why should we be good and why in this cruel world, wicked are more happy and successful? To find out the answer to this question, Plato had to invite the whole community-the Polis. In other words , if you can find out the right direction to form polis which is healthy then the importance to individual happiness is ruled out. For Plato, justice is a base which could only be frutifully gained by bringing about balance in wisdom, courage and temperance. For Plato, level an ideal state c an be self desructive. Plato posited the view that even ideal state where all have equal rights could also be perverting and it could be happen in turn by the very basic concept on which democracy stands.Though country, the Statesman, the Laws are three main political dialogues of Plato, and they developed their ideologies on the basis of what today is termed as conceptual analysis-in other words clarification of the basic principles on which politics stands and its importance. For Plato, this conceptual analysis was a preliminary stage for further critical evaluation of thought processes. According to Plato, making right decisions on the administration and making right choice between peace and war are the two most crucial initial steps of good politics.Such decisions could not be left into the hands of public only but by good orator. Ciceros works included fifty speeches, around thousand letters to friends and associates, among them the several of his works included rhetorical th eories and twelve out of them are on philosophical topics. These display great intellectual thoughts that deepen Ciceros conviction that both the philosophy and rhetoric are independent to each other and are very important for human life and society. His works on philosophy stand witness to the rhetorical techniques and means of Roman oratory. The political philosophy of Plato was largely based on speculations about ideal state. Though he did conceptualize his points by imploring upon the city-states of Greece and events in modern political scenario, yet his discussions evolved largely around what he and other intellectuals thought to be ideal states. The essence of his ideological state lied in the inescapably of the man on the individual level and on the whole and these needs of the man joined them together to work for the common goal. The members that make the society could be divided into different classes according to their particular work criteria. As according to Plato, in m an, there are two different souls in the same way in the society also, there are three different classes philosophers, warriors, and producers one of which belongs to the rational souls and the rest two belong to the irrational souls and each class has its own particular role to fulfill. For e. g. philosophers run the state, warriors defend it and producers cultivate their skills to produce the materialistic goods needed by the state. On the other hand, much of the Ciceros political thoughts followed Aristotle concept of ideal state. For Cicero, there were three main forms of government monarchy, aristocracy, and the constitutional state, but he also believed that there is every scope of perversion in each form of government, which emerges from those who do not have regard for the public good. Not one form of government is perfectly good. Instead Cicero prescribed what is known as composite form of government with the principles of monarchy, aristocracy and democracy. This form of go vernment today is known as Common Wealth form of Government and Cicero termed as the reticuloendothelial system Publica, literally known as The Peoples thing. His composite republic is based on the monarchical principle, also known as consuls the aristocratic is likened to the Senate of Rome, which performs both the legislative and executive functions. The democratic principles are tribunes referred to as committees (comitia) in ancient Rome. Rather than revolutionary or politically visionary, Cicero was being considered more as a political conservative who was eager to preserve the Roman Republic against the designs of Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, and Octavian whose aim was to make Rome into their own personal empire. But Cicero did not make it in preventing Roman Republic from collapse and was murdered by the followers of Mark Anthony. (Marcus Cicero, Section 12). Ciceros law was based on these two That true law was reason, That good is always good, that bad is always bad and in tr aditional Roman values. (Simmons Online) He criticized all other form of constitutions for breaching the rights and interests of people and conveyed that political system should provide legal rights to every one equally but give electoral, legislative and judicial rights in accordance to their merit and wealth.Ciceros firstly book On the Orator laid importance of Oratory in the politics of Rome. Oratory had been part of the Roman politics, and Cicero mainly superimposed its value. His discussions merely rotate around education basically history and poetry with composition of logic, philosophical theory and rhetorical techniques. As said by Stephen Whitess, Orator, clearly reflects Ciceros own proficiencies, unites thorough knowledge of history and law with complete command of in a Romanized version of Platos philosopher-rulers. (White online edition). Both Plato and Cicero wanted education to be based on philosophy to produce best statesman. While Platos more emphasis was on train ing on mathematical ground and transcendental metaphysics, Cicero wanted many practical programs of instructions designed to cultivate articulacy and civic debate. (White Online edition). His On the Republic is his much thought provoking dialects on leadership and politics. It was almost lost but its first third was recovered in 1820. On the Republic is a challenge of Platos Greek political theory based on utopian thoughts. He defined republic as a people affair, (res populi) and people as a community who have joined in to one consensus on their mutual interest. His other part constitutes his explanation on types of constitutions in classical Greek style and developed the data on the development of Roman institutions whereas some of the sections which are either lost or preserved in very poor state have in short explanation of Hellenistic debates on the reputation and rewards of justice and the discussions on education system of Rome. Yet another of his book On Laws is a sequel to a legal system. Contradicting Platos laws, he contended that Rome already had embodied itself much the ideals of law. On Laws truly appeared to be very important in the thought that it contains full account of natural law. found entirely on Stoic ideas, Cicero contended that the whole concept of law is already a part of nature with an appropriate order, which could be codified in regulation for final tribunal in a court of law. After these writings, civil war erupted and he did not go further into this, but last of his books summed up his thinking on political grounds by bringing out the importance of morality in public life. In his On Duties which was his epistle to his son, he gave the routes to convey on the proper code of conduct for Roman nobility emphasizing justice, benefaction and public service. His entire focus was on the men of high status and their way of dealing with the problems relating to personal ambitions and social obligations. Cicero too always stood on his pro found trust on the noblest trait of human beings, which is their humanity and inculcate cerebrate power to improve the lives of human beings. His thoughts on humanism are best skewed in his On the Ends of Good and Evil. The dialogue herein reflects on the question of what and where is the end of all human actions and the way you attain the happiness.Cicero agreed with Aristotle and saw that human beings are political or social animals. But nature has given to mankind a compulsion to do good, and a desire to defend the well being of the community . (Cicero Rudd R I. 1). But the most influential model book was The Republic by Plato. Ciceros homage to the Republic was found in its expression in the section which was lost but also found its place in his concluding marks of the cosmos and the afterlife (The Dream of Scipio), which reflects the myth of err by the end of the Platos end book.Plato has been directly quoted and or reflected several times. Ciceros Scipio states that, Rath er than invent a city for themselves as Plato did, he prefers to examine a real historical locating (The Roman Constitution) which comes closet to the ideal. (Cicero, Rudd, Powell xvi) But it was also mistake to espouse that, because Cicero had departed from Plato in certain way, his Republic is in very deep sense anti-platonic.It is further said that Cicerios Scipio was enough of a Platonist to regard philosophy and astronomy as wise mans true occupation, and to declare that one should take political offices only our of sense of duty or necessity, as Platos Guardian do. (I-26-29)( Cicero, Rudd, Powell 17) There are many similarities between the Platos Republic and Cicero, de ra republic. Each formulated on the account of relationship between citizen and state. Both of them discussed on justice, both of them bestowed theory of constitution. Both of them also had mentioned discussion on education and a vision of an after life.Sharpely too suggested that Cicero Republic in the sens e, Platos turned inside out. (Cicero Zetzel 14) In the Republic by Plato, Socrates and his friends are laborious to implore and analyze on what should be an ideal city but do not want to analyze the state in which he was living. Plato and Cicero were only mouthpieces in an arena of political thoughts in their respective periods whereas in Ciceros De re publica, all the comments whether directly or indirectly emphasized on the organization of the state they ought to be living, which was Roman Republic in the final stages.

The movie Cromwell Essay Example for Free

The movie Cromwell EssayAs the movie Cromwell so clearly indicates, the struggle between major power Charles I and Parliament was an important superstar for the development of British government and government all over the world. The two sides came to a fork in a proverbial philosophical road and they could not overcome differences in those opinions. On iodine hand, King Charles I was looking to protect what he thought was a mandate from God to act how he wished as the King of England. The members of slope Parliament were looking to protect not only their own interests, but the interests of the quite a little of England in not allowing one person to gain absolute control of the country. King Charles operated primarily under the assumption that people would respect the manifesto of reverent Right of Kings. In his own mind, Charles was appointed to the throne by God and because of that, he had not only the right, but the mandate to do whatever he pleased. Along his line of th inking, King Charles had a responsibility to do Gods work while he occupied the top seat of the position monarchy. The Kings entire tenure in control was marred by the fact that he did whatever he treasured without first consulting the powers that existed in Parliament. He levied taxes against the people of the country without the approval of Parliament. That was outdone only by the fact that he married a Roman Catholic woman and took other actions which brought the vaunted church building of England dangerously close to their former roots of Catholicism. In doing this, he not only threatened the power of the men in Parliament, but he alike threatened the sanctity of the nation, which so many parties had worked very hard to protect.Parliament helped to push the action to the point where a war was absolutely necessary. They were prominent members of English society that had to work very hard to get to where they were in the government. Though power was certainly not the only thing that concerned these men, it was definitely one of their primary concerns through the entire struggle. They did not want to give even an inch to the King for fear that he might take that inch and conk with it.That particular Parliament had seen what could happen when a King had complete control and they were not about to let it happen again without a fight. In addition, they wanted to protect the countrys economic system, which struggled for much of the reign of King Charles I. The power struggle between these two sides is one of the many historical events that has had a significant impact on how the American government works. When the forefathers of the United States took the time to frame the constitution, they took measures to create a balance of power. As a direct resolving of King Charles and the situation with Parliament, the American founding fathers were sure to put a system of checks and balances into the core of the countrys values. That was to make sure that no one party , be it the President, the courts, or Congress, could not have complete power and control over the country. The realized that when a leader tried to use religion to reassert his actions, it made stopping such a mandate extremely difficult for both the commoners of the country and the people who also held control.
