Both distills explore the theme of adultery and extreme examples of battle in a relationship. However, the differing time periods in which they are set and the separate ways in which the authors portray them, vary accordingly. In both extracts it appears that the wo worldly concernly protagonists seem to be the source of the problem within the relationship and the extracts move on their supposed adulterous behaviour. This comparison in equivalent manner shows the way Irene has become vulnerable, having lost her independence and freedom. This mirrors the locating of Desdemona in Shakespeares Othello.
